SWPA OPEN COMPETITIE 2023 | Categorie winnaars & shortlist aangekondigd

De World Photography Organization kondigt met genoegen de categoriewinnaars en de shortlist aan van de open competitie van de Sony World Photography Awards 2023. Tijdens deze competitie worden de beste afzonderlijke foto’s van 2022 erkend.

Meer dan 415.000 foto’s uit meer dan 200 landen en gebieden werden ingezonden voor de Sony World Photography Awards 2023 en meer dan 200.000 mensen namen deel aan de Open competitie. De winnaars ontvangen elk gear van Sony en zullen kansmaken op de prestigieuze Open Photographer of the Year-titel en een prijs van $ 5.000 (USD).

De overall winnaar van de Open competitie wordt 13 april bekend gemaakt tijdens de prijsuitreiking van de Sony World Photography Awards in Londen. Zowel gewonnen als genomineerde foto’s worden getoond als onderdeel van de Sony World Photography Awards-tentoonstelling in Somerset House van 14 april tot 1 mei 2023.

De tien categorie winnaars zijn:

ARCHITECTURE
Mark Benham (UK) met The Silos, een collage-achtige foto van silos en omgevende gebouwen met een eye-catching rozige gloed bij de haven van Brest in Frankrijk.

CREATIVE
Boris Eldagsen (Duitsland) met PSEUDOMNESIA | The Electricia, een gedenkwaardig zwart-witportret van twee vrouwen van verschillende generaties, dat doet denken aan de beeldtaal van familieportretten uit de jaren 40.

LANDSCAPE
Giorgos Rousopoulos (Griekenland) voor zijn afbeelding van een Grieks berglandschap met een wandelaar die de berg Tymfi beklimt, majestueus op de achtergrond staand en uitkijkend over Pindus National Park.

LIFESTYLE
Azim Khan Ronnie (Bangladesh) voor Childhood, wat kinderen vastlegt die in en uit tientallen gigantische kegels (topa’s) weven in een Bengaalse rijstverwerkingsfabriek terwijl ze spelen met een kar die door arbeiders wordt gebruikt om rijst te vervoeren en te drogen.

MOTION
Zhenhuan Zhou (China) voor Slam on the Brakes. Deze foto legt een cowgirl tijdens een barrelrace-wedstrijd in Ontario, Canada. In deze wedstrijden rijden cowgirls rond vaten waarbij de snelste tot winnaar wordt gekroond.

NATURAL WORLD & WILDLIFE
Dinorah Graue Obscura (Mexico) voor Mighty Pair, een zwart-witportret gemaakt tijdens een reis in Zuid-Texas, van twee gekuifde caracara-vogels die stil staan en achter de camera in dezelfde richting kijken. Het lijkt alsof ze poseren voor de fotograaf.

OBJECT
Mieke Douglas (Nederland) voor Recycled. Alles is niet wat het lijkt in een trompe-l’oeil-shot van bloemachtige plastic zakken en tule gerangschikt als een boeket. Dit shot nodigt ons uit om nog eens te kijken.

PORTRETTEN
Sukhy Hullait (UK) voor Charlie, een in het midden geschoten portret van een jonge tiener die, samen met zijn vrienden, besloot een verlaten pubparkeerterrein om te toveren tot een skatepark toen de meeste gesloten waren tijdens de pandemie.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
Andreas Mikonauschke (Duitsland) voor Exhausted, een suggestief zwart-witportret van mannen die op het punt van uitputting staan na het optillen en dragen van zware houten lijsten met beelden van bijbelse taferelen door de straten van Andalusië tijdens de traditionele paasprocessies van ‘Semana Santa’.

TRAVEL
Max Vere-Hodge (UK) voor Ghosts, een dramatische zwart-witfoto van de Mundari-stam in Zuid-Soedan die verschijnt tussen de nachtelijke vuren die ze aansteken om de tseetseevliegen en muggen weg te houden van hun geliefde Ankole-Watusi-koeien.

De Open competitie van dit jaar is beoordeeld door Eric Schlosser, Art Director, Tbilisi Art Fair, Georgia.

De overall winnaars in de Student, Youth, Open en Professional competities van de Sony World Photography Awards 2023 worden op 13 april 2023 bekendgemaakt en zullen van 14 april tot 1 mei 2023 te zien zijn als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling in Somerset House, Londen.
